摘要: Received November 8, 2006This review highlights some recent developments and diversified applications of islets in diabetesresearch as they are rapidly emerging a model system biomedical biotechnological research.Isolated have formed an effective vitro antidiabetic drug development programme, screening potential hypoglycaemic agents for investigating their mechanisms action. Yetanother application isolated could be to understand the b cell death vitroand identify sites intervention possible cytoprotection. Advances immunoisolationand immunomodulation protocols made xeno-transplantation feasible withoutimmunosuppression thus increasing availability islets. Research areas pancreaticand non pancreatic stem cells has given new hope diabetic subjects renew islet massfor cure diabetes. Investigations factors leading differentiation pancreaticstem/progenitor would interest likely induce regeneration indiabetics. Similarly search beta protective great future preservation ofresidual mass left after diabetogenic insults. We detailed various ofislets diabetes research context current status, progress challenges andlong term prospects cure.Key words Cytoprotection - hypoglycaemics transplantation
