摘要: The nitrate contents of nearly 500 firn samples collected at various sites on the Antarctic ice sheet are reported. Additional chemical measurements all major ions, in particular protons, have also been performed so that new conclusions regarding most probable form and origin can now be drawn. It is shown deposited as gaseous HNO 3 tropospheric sources dominate this remote region. Continental anthropogenic nitrates not significant contributors. suggested lightning tropical and/or mid latitudes likely source nitrate. formation (or its precursors) stratosphere discussed possible evidence for contribution several profiles carefully investigated. absence a convincing correlation between solar factors concentrations snow confirms past activity fluctuations cannot reconstructed from polar cores. spatial temporal variations observed study are, however, fully explained. Finally, emphasis placed necessity undertaking atmosphere order to elucidate deposition mechanism component atmospheric chemistry. DOI: 10.1111/j.1600-0889.1986.tb00190.x
