摘要: The array of quasi-one-dimensional indium chains in the Si(111)- $(4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}1)$-In surface reconstruction exhibits a phase transition to low-temperature $(8\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}2)$ phase. It has been suggested that this is related charge density wave (CDW) formation. x-ray diffraction results presented here demonstrate at 20 K CDW not yet condensed into superstructure even though good transverse coupling was established. This indicates formation cannot be driving force for transition. Furthermore we elucidate subtle highly anisotropic interchain correlations and reveal detailed atomic structure
