Market Participation in the Age of Big Dams: The Belo Monte Hydroelectric Dam and Its Impact on Rural Agrarian Households

摘要: With rapid population growth comes the ever-important task of meeting energy demand that this requires, and many world’s tropical regions have turned to hydropower address challenges associated with increasing consumption. Hydropower is an important policy issue in Brazil, it promoted as preferred electricity option, because least expensive terms long-term returns on investment; Belo Monte dam Northern Brazil provides opportunity study effects large investments hydroelectric infrastructure surrounding local population. Using a matched panel data spanning 10 years (2005 2015), we impacts Brazil’s cocoa other food crop producers region. We find households seen decline rural employment opportunities, despite improvements productivity experienced declining production. construction largely completed, farmers must now face decreased access shifts while there are advantages opportunities new development, special considerations necessary ensure safety nets place assist those who will see economic opportunities.
