摘要: Abstract Morphological variation is common in kelps (Phaeophyceae, Laminariales) and often results from differences environmental conditions. Stipe hollowing, particular, occurs several kelp species worldwide but to date has been investigated for only a few primarily at local scales. Here we describe the patterns of stipe hollowing both within among populations Eisenia arborea across 800 km its distribution along west coast North America. Our indicate that there are large latitudinal occurrence (i.e. frequency hollow stipes population) extent length cavity relative length) E. sporophytes. varied our study locations, with most southern population exhibiting tallest stipes, northern shortest three central intermediate lengths.
