Epidemiology of inflammatory bowel disease among U.S. Military veterans

摘要: The Department of Veterans Affairs maintains a computerized patient treatment file that contains all records from veterans treated as inpatients in VA hospitals distributed throughout the United States. Using files 1986 to 1989, present study takes advantage this large national data set examine demographic and geographic associations inflammatory bowel disease. Inflammatory disease tended affect predominantly female, white, younger veterans, these trends being more marked cases Crohn's than ulcerative colitis. Hospital discharges secondary both colitis appeared be frequent northern southern parts States, but did not show seasonal variation different general pattern other diagnoses. results confirm observations made studies suggest among populations is modulated by similar pathophysiologic mechanisms environmental risk factors.
