摘要: Background Knowledge of molecular biology and genomics continues to expand rapidly, promising numerous opportunities for improving health. However, a key aspect the success genomic medicine is related public understanding acceptance. Design Using community consultations an online survey, we explored attitudes expectations about research. Results Thirty-three members general in Newfoundland, Canada, took part sessions, while 1024 Atlantic Canadians completed survey. Overall, many participants noted they lacked knowledge genetics associated research opportunity ask questions throughout sessions. Participants were largely hopeful its capacity improve health, not only current residents, but also future generations. did accept such uncritically, variety complex issues arose during reflected survey responses. Discussion With proliferation biobanks rapid pace discoveries research, support will be crucial realize health improvements. If researchers can engage regular, transparent dialogue, this two-way communication could allow greater process design efficient effective genetic services, informed by that use them.
