Race and Home Ownership, 1900 to 1990

摘要: The historical evolution of racial differences in income the 20th century United States has been examined intensively by economists, but wealth far less. This paper uses IPUMS data to study trends home ownership since 1900. At turn approximately 20 percent black adult males (ages 64) owned their homes, compared with 46 white men, a gap 26 percentage points. By 1990, rate had increased 52 and fallen 19.5 All long-term rise ownership, almost all corresponding decline gap, occurred after 1940, majority both changes concentrated 1960 1980 period. We also use race incidence mortgages, value owner-occupied housing.
