摘要: The ecosystems of South Florida are unique in the world. defining features natural Everglades (large spatial scale, temporal patterns water storage and sheetflow, low nutrient levels) historically allowed a mosaic habitats with characteristic animals. Massive hydrological alterations have halved Everglades, ecological sustainability requires fundamental changes management. US Man Biosphere Human-Dominated Systems Directorate is conducting case study using ecosystem management as framework for exploring options mutually dependent society environment. A new methodology was developed to specify goals, characterize human factors affecting ecosystem, conduct scenario/consequence analyses examine societal implications. has sufficient urban, agricultural, needs, but most drains sea through system canals; thus, issue not competition resources water. goal reestablish quantity, timing, distribution over area restore essence Everglades. Agricultural Area (EAA) at risk because soil degradation, vulnerability sugar price supports, policies Cuban imports, political/economic forces aligned against production. One scenario suggested EAA while under private production, thereby linking sustainability. Further needed, MAB project suggests achieving consistent may be feasible.
