摘要: Introduction. Sports injuries account for substantial morbidity and medical cost. To direct intervention, a population-based study of the causes types sports was undertaken. Method. An injury surveillance system established at all trauma center hospitals that treat residents 10 to 19 years old in District Columbia Chief Medical Examiner9s Office. record abstractions were completed those seen an emergency department, admitted hospital, or who died from June 1996 through 1998. Findings. Seventeen percent ( n = 2563) occurred while participating 1 6 (baseball/softball, basketball, biking, football, skating, soccer) resulting event-based rate 25.0 per 1000 adolescents 25.0/1000 population year. Rates higher males sports. The most common mechanisms falls (E880–888) being struck by against objects (E916–918). Hospitalization required 2% visits there no deaths. Of requiring hospitalization, 51% involved other persons, 12% equipment-related, 8% poor field/surface conditions. baseball injuries, 55% ball bat impact often head. Injuries involving collisions others point supervision enforcement safety rules. 16% 20% hospitalizations related equipment environmental factors suggest least this may be amenable preventive strategies. Design change warranted prevention equipment-related many settings use available safe locations
