Activity and movement patterns of the Lusitanian toadfish inferred from pressure‐sensitive data‐loggers in the Mira estuary (Portugal)

摘要: Activity rhythms and movement patterns of 10 adult specimens the Lusitanian toadfish, Halobatrachus didactylus (Bloch & Schneider), were studied in River Mira estuary (Portugal) using pressure-sensitive data-loggers acoustic transmitters. Laboratory experiments performed to assess applicability sampling methodology track toadfish movements. Field results confirmed that species usually displays a sedentary behaviour, although revealing stronger disposition perform greater longitudinal movements than it was formerly believed. Frequency influenced by circadian cycle, tidal stage type tide. Lomb-Scargle periodograms revealed significant daily periodicity all studied. Two fish displayed intercalary could be related with cycle. This study also indicates this does not exclusively adopt sit wait predation but probably undertakes an active search for food.
