In this study, a very extensive law protected mangrove area in the Eastern part of Guanabara Bay was screened for petroleum hydrocarbons (PAHs) and bacterial activity. The aim to understand processes that control oil contamination sediments if there is relationship between Surface sediment samples were collected from 23 stations within shoreline. parameters pH, Eh, salinity temperature measured situ. immediately analyzed activity, including: 1) electron transport system activity (ETSA); 2) esterase enzyme (EST); 3) biomass. Analyses total PAHs contents performed by UV-visible spectrofluorescence, organic carbon titration phosphorus photocolorimetry, after wet oxidation. results show that, spite significant amounts loaded into bay, Guapimirim still presents low concentrations. presence elevated concentrations matter nutrients provides sufficient energy development an important quality determining bacteria as indicated ETSA EST. When easily metabolized would be predominance enzyme. seems active most time, because using readly available PAHs. although supply matter, obtain its refractive matter. It suggested during degradation some are also degraded.
