A Novel Method of Light Weighting Aluminium Using Magnesium Syntactic Composite Core

摘要: In this study, hybrid composite consisting of aluminium (Al) shell and magnesium/glass microballoon (Mg-20 wt.% GMB) syntactic core was fabricated in a shell-core pattern by combining powder metallurgy disintegrated melt deposition (DMD) techniques. Physical, microstructural mechanical properties as-cast Al Al/Mg-20GMB were examined. Approximately 13% reduction density (with respect to aluminium) realized through the use core. Microstructural investigations revealed reasonable interfacial integrity between Mg-GMB material presence Al, Mg GMB phases. The interface region showed hardness 109 ± 2 Hv comparison (68 4 Hv) Mg-20GMB (174 5 Hv). yield strength ultimate compressive increased ~65.4% ~60%, respectively. Further, energy absorption under loading for ~26% higher compared pure Al. This study validated that with superior absolute specific can be used weight critical applications.
