摘要: PURPOSE: To examine the relationship between monocular and binocular visual acuities as predictors of disability in a population-based sample individuals 65 years age older. METHODS: Two thousand five hundred twenty community-dwelling residents Salisbury, Maryland, ages 84 were recruited for study. Corrected acuity was measured monocularly binocularly using ETDRS charts. Reading speed, face discrimination, self-reported difficulty with tasks also determined. RESULTS: Binocular is predicted reasonable accuracy by better eye alone, but not widely used American Medical Association (AMA) weighted-average algorithm. The AMA algorithm significantly underestimates when interocular difference exceeds one line. Monocular reading speed than weighted score or recently proposed Functional Vision Score (FVS). eye, acuity, FVS algorithms equally good vision disability. None measures recognition ability. CONCLUSIONS: older can be inferred from acuity. There little evidence inhibition two eyes are unequal, opposed to computing impairment. For that strongly associated such reading, this association captured does require separate assessment
