摘要: Even though glass has high intrinsic strength, it is a brittle material which suffers strength degradation due to static fatigue. Stringent control of preform preparation, drawing conditions and immediate coating with protective materials may limit the initial flaw population in fibers, but no or pretreatment can completely prevent under tensile loading conditions. If fiber surface compression, however, one guarantee preservation for loads less than compression greatly increase time failure larger loads. This paper discusses fabrication technique, “Molecular Stuffing” especially suited producing optical fibers having residual compression. The basic aspects molecular stuffing are discussed particular emphasis on its applicability strengthening.
