摘要: Whether atrophy is a precursor to high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (HGPIN) and cancer controversial. A virtual slide set comprising 48 prostatectomy cases was used investigate associations among the amounts spacing of these entities. Foci without inflammation (A), with (AI), (by patterns), HGPIN were digitally annotated. Atrophy's proximity assessed two measurements: abutment (touching) or nearness (≤2 μm touching). Area sums per specimen computed for A, AI, cancer, HGPIN. Abutment rates AI foci 23% versus 21% (p = NS); nearness, 29% near 12% (P .0001). in 1.4% 2.4% range. When abutted it disproportionately Gleason grade 3 even after adjusting lesser frequency higher-grade foci. (A + AI) showed no correlations those HGPIN, mostly negative ones area sum tumor volume cancer. In conclusion, some preferential spatial association although correlated negatively These divergent suggest that biopsy specimens may have clinical relevance. The inflammatory (AI) merging far less than reported previously, weakening theory gives rise
