Factors controlling sensitivity in ultraviolet disinfection of secondary effluents

摘要: Evaluation of ultraviolet (UV) light disinfection must distinguish between the UV-sensitivity bacteria themselves and difference UV intensity applied that received by organism caused primarily UV-absorbing materials. Samples from a variety wastewater effluents were irradiated in simplified system where factors controlling could be accurately measured. Total coliform survival was determined as function dose for both unfiltered 10-..mu..m filtered effluent samples. Particles counted size class. Coliforms not associated with larger particles only slightly less sensitive to than cultured purified E. coli. Particulate-associated coliforms more resistant; resistance number suspended particles. At 26 mW x s/cm/sup 2/, correlated best greater 40 ..mu..m (r/sup 2/ = 0.55), solids removed filtration 0.65).
