Can the Rural Poor in India Afford to Treat Non-Communicable Diseases?

摘要: Objective: Non-communicable diseases (NCD) are on the increase in low-income countries, where healthcare costs paid mostly out-of-pocket. We investigate financial burden of NCD vs. communicable (CD) among rural poor India and assess whether they can afford to treat NCD.Methods: used data from two household surveys undertaken 2009–2010 7389 households (39 205 individuals) Odisha Bihar. All persons sampled households, irrespective age gender, were included analysis. classify self-reported illnesses as NCD, CD or ‘other morbidities’ following WHO classification.Results: accounted for around 20% month preceding survey 30% The most prevalent representing highest share outpatient costs, musculoskeletal, digestive cardiovascular diseases. Cardiovascular problems also generated inpatient costs. Women, older less-poor reported higher prevalence NCD. Outpatient (consultations, medicines, laboratory tests imaging) represented a bigger income than CD. Patients with more likely report hospitalisation.Conclusion: settings pay considerably patients For cases that chronic, recurring this would be aggravated. cost care consumes big part per person income, obliging rely informal intra-family cross-subsidisation.
