Overutilization of regional burn centers for pediatric patients--a healthcare system problem that should be corrected

摘要: Abstract Background Minor burns represent .96% to 1.5% of emergency department visits, yet burn center referral is common. Analysis the Grady Memorial Hospital Burn Center examined feasibility and savings if pediatric were managed locally with as-needed consultation. Methods Prospective data on 219 consecutive admissions between December 2008 September 2010 reviewed. National international cohorts compared. Results Sixty-six percent patients male, mean age was 6.1 years, 92% insured. The most common mechanism burning liquid scalding (40%). Seventy had over Conclusions Pediatric require assessment, debridement, dressing changes. Grafting rarely necessary. Patients are transferred because a lack training, suffer economic burden treatment delay. Savings could be realized treated select referral.
