摘要: Many seal vocalizations consist of frequency swept tones. The signal detection thresholds a harbor (Phoca vitulina) and human listeners were measured using ascending descending tones at 1/3‐ 1‐oct bandwidths. increased or decreased exponentially traversed the same range. sweeps centered on 2, 4, 8 kHz for study 0.5, 1, 2 listeners. bandwidth sweep did not affect abilities either had lower (1–5 dB) when presented with (F=32.04, df=(1,31), p≤0.000001). Human also (t=−4.78, df=52, p≤0.0001). Pinniped calls may function as well long‐distance communicative signals.
