Deconstructing stigma: perceptions of HIV-seropositive mothers and their disclosure to children.

摘要: This study addressed the perceptions of stigma and disclo- sure behavior HIV-seropositive mothers. Eighty-eight HIV-seroposi- tive women in New York City completed two independent measures stigma, Perceived Stigma Scale Devaluation-Discrimination Measure. Disclosers (67%) nondisclosers (33%) were similar most sociodemographic characteristics-marital status, race, religion em- ployment, with exception age education. Significant differ- ences found between disclosure groups use secrecy as a management tool perceived devaluation-discrimination as- sociated an HIV diagnosis. Nondisclosers to children signifi- cantly more likely than disclosers (t = 2.76; p .01), feel devalued discriminated against result serostatus 3.11; .01).
