β‐CARBOLINE ALKALOIDS: MECHANISMS OF PHOTOTOXICITY TO BACTERIA AND INSECTS

摘要: Abstract— Phototoxicity of five naturally occurring (3-carboline alkaloids was assayed against a series Escherichia coli strains and the insect Trichoplusia ni (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Rank order efficacy compounds comparable in both organisms. Although bacterial assay demonstrated oxygen dependence, degree phototoxicity did not correlate with relative efficiency vitro singlet or hydrogen peroxide photoproduction by alkaloids. A better correlation observed between chromatographic migration distances (lipophilicity) phototoxicity. Therefore, hydrophobic mechanisms which diffuse varying efficiencies into cells vicinity target molecules may be important modes for these compounds.
