摘要: Monitoring of progress towards the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) drinking water target relies on classification sources as “improved” or “unimproved” an indicator for safety. We adjust current Joint Programme (JMP) estimate by accounting microbial quality and sanitary risk using only-nationally representative data currently available, that from WHO UNICEF “Rapid Assessment Drinking Water Quality”. A principal components analysis (PCA) national environmental development indicators was used to create models predicted, most countries, proportions piped other-improved supplies are faecally contaminated; these sources, lack basic protection against contamination. 1.8 billion people (28% global population) unsafe in 2010. The 2010 JMP is 783 million (11%) use unimproved sources. Our estimates revise 1990 baseline 23% 37%, 12% 18%, resulting a shortfall 10% population MDG In contrast, “use improved source” suggests drinking-water has already been achieved. additional 1.2 (18%) systems with significant risks. While our imprecise, magnitude health implications suggest greater attention needed better understand manage
