Host range expansion of native insects to exotic trees increases with area of introduction and the presence of congeneric native trees

摘要: Summary Exotic tree species are widely used in forest plantations for their often high productivity and performance compared to native trees. However, these advantages may be compromised by herbivore damage. A list of European insect that have expanded host range one 28 exotic introduced Europe was compiled from a systematic literature review. The number successful expansions analysed using three predictors: (i) phylogenetic relatedness between species; (ii) area covered Europe; (iii) time since introduction into Europe. In total, 590 insects trees were found, mainly polyphagous (43%); 25% the cases reported some type damage. Bark wood borers, defoliators dominant guilds. The recruited where major damage occurred positively correlated with geographical extent presence congeneric trees. Synthesis applications. use creates opportunities herbivores expand increase if they planted next congeners. Risk assessment studies recommended when introducing new forestry plantations. assessments should include trials on susceptibility any potential damaging organisms range.
