The Effects of Family Functioning on Academic Achievement in Children with Sickle Cell Disease

摘要: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a complex group of genetic blood disorders that currently affects 90 000-100 000 Americans primarily African descent. SCD leads to physiological and psychosocial distress. In relation school youth with are at high risk poor academic outcomes including: low scores on tests achievement increased grades special education grade retention. There paucity literature family functioning's effect functioning in SCD. Poor has been related many other such as behavior problems mental health quality life. The current study examined whether directly the investigated moderates relationships between severity SES age using simultaneous multiple regression models. utilized data collected beginning phase three Cooperative Study Cell Disease (CSSCD) consisting 198 aged 6 16 years. Family was evaluated Environment Scale by broad reading math from Woodcock-Johnson Revised Tests Academic Achievement competence School Competence CBCL. Results indicate variables were neither nor did they moderate relationship factors. also indicated IQ measured FSIQ WISC-III most powerful predictor functioning. Limitations clinical implications discussed.
