The performance of graphite - epoxy composite with embedded optical fibers under compression

摘要: The effect of embedded optical fibers on the compressive strength and stiffness a graphite - epoxy composite, AS4/3501-6, consisting 30 plies with 40% plies, 20% was investigated. Five laminates were fabricated different numbers fibers, fiber diameters, locations, orientations respect to reinforcing which provided 15 groups specimens. Each group contained 10 specimens tested under compression using an IITRI fixture. Optical oriented perpendicular loading direction in all maximum reduction 27% where two placed surrounding fibers. In this case, one located at specimen midplane while other three from outer surface, resulting asymmetric condition about midplane. Other variations resulted less some cases did not affect strength.
