Same university, same challenges? Development strategies of two schools at a prestigious Chinese university in a changing higher education landscape

摘要: In a globalized world, universities face challenges adapting to changing environmental pressures and expectations of legitimacy. Studies on the topic have tended focus in North America Europe, while Chinese received less attention, perhaps due their status as latecomers global higher education. Based institutional theory resource dependence theory, this study examines development process two schools with different characteristics prestigious public university. document interview analyses, findings indicate that both advocate internationalization strategy but for reasons. response environment, one school continues conform environment; meanwhile, other is competing task environment also adhering university’s state’s norms, beliefs, demands expectations. analysis, article recommends policymakers allow proactive willing further positioning national education systems more autonomy leeway developing themselves.
