摘要: Streptococcus pneumoniae, type 23F, resistant to penicillin (MIC, 2 micrograms/mL) and multiple other antimicrobic agents, was isolated from middle ear fluid of a child with otitis media attending day care center in Ohio. To determine the extent spread this strain, nasopharyngeal culture surveys were done, 52 carriers identified among 250 children index center. No found 121 at two centers same urban area. Use prophylactic doses antibiotics (P < .001) frequent use 0.001) risk factors for carriage. Carriers more likely have had episodes .02) not responsive antimicrobial therapy .001). Strategies limit highly pneumococcal strains should include encouraging judicious agents reevaluating indications agents.
