摘要: Leaf margins of many plant species belonging to the floras several continents feature a conspicuous band red/purple color around their periphery. Despite widespread distribution this leaf trait, very few studies have proposed or tested hypotheses explain its significance (if any). Common explanations for coloration, such as photoprotection, camouflage, attraction seed dispersers, undermining herbivorous insect camouflage do not seem, at first glance, be applicable pattern. Could pigments localized margin still function in these traditional ecological physiological roles? Or should new devised that are more specific coloration margin? The purpose paper is review and explore potential functions pigmented margins, hopes inspiring further inquiry into topic.
