Pregnancy-related substance use in the United States during 1996–1998

摘要: Abstract Objective To provide a baseline estimate of the national prevalence pregnancy-related illicit drug use and abstinence rates. Methods We analyzed data collected between 1996 1998 from National Household Survey on Drug Abuse, nationally representative sample survey 22,303 noninstitutionalized women aged 18–44 years, whom 1249 were pregnant. Results During 1996–1998, 6.4% nonpregnant childbearing age 2.8% pregnant reported that they used drugs. Of who drugs, relative proportion abstained drugs after recognition pregnancy increased 28% during first trimester to 93% by third trimester. However, because postpregnancy relapse, net reduction in at postpartum was only 24%. Marijuana accounted for three-fourths use, cocaine one-tenth use. those over half two-thirds also cigarettes alcohol. Among sociodemographic subgroups, young (18–30 years) or unmarried, with less than high school education had highest rates Conclusion The continued burden calls policy efforts enable primary care providers identify refer substances treatment support services. Prevention uptake should be an integral part public health programs women.
