摘要: THE CHILEAN EARTHQUAKE OF MARCH 28, 1965, AFFECTED A COPPER MINING ZONE WHERE THERE ARE MANY TAILINGS DAMS. WRITERS VISTED TEN LOCATIONS AND OBSERVED 22 DAMS, 11 WHICH WERE BADLY CRACKED OR FAILED. EXCEPT FOR THEIR SIZES, ALMOST ALL FAILED DAMS SIMILAR, THEY CONSTRUCTED ON RATHER LOW PERMEABILITY SOILS BY HYDRAULIC-FILL METHOD, WITH CENTRAL PONDS USUALLY FEW METERS FROM BORDERS UNCOMPACTED SANDY SHELLS EXTERIOR SLOPES ABOUT 35 DEGREES. TYPICAL FAILURE WAS PRODUCED DURING IMMEDIATELY AFTER QUAKE, INCLUDED SLOPE SLIDE FLOW LIQUEFIED CORE. BEHAVIOR EACH DAM IS DESCRIBED, CORE SHELL SAMPLING INFORMATION GIVEN. EL COBRE 2,400,000 TONS FLOODED VALLEY, STUDIED IN MORE DETAIL, SAFETY FACTORS EVALUATED. IT CONCLUDED THAT THIS KIND SEISMICALLY UNSTABLE, SOME RECOMMENDATIONS /ASCE/
