摘要: Background. Thorough skin self-examination (TSSE) has substantial potential to reduce melanoma mortality by early detection. Methods. We interviewed 2,126 patients before a scheduled routine visit with primary care physician, at which participation in randomized trial was offered as part of the Check-It-Out Project. asked about examination behavior and related issues. Results. By our priori definition TSSE, 18% participants performed this activity, but other definitions led widely varying estimates 12% 38%. Using partner assist strongly associated TSSE. That generally spouse, wives were more likely their husbands these examinations than reverse. The availability wall mirror particularly important predictor TSSE performance. Visual impairment also affected performance. Conclusions. Estimates performance vary substantially questions used elicit information. Partners, spouses, appear play critical role conduct often effectively engaged process. Appropriate circumstances, such mirror, are factors. These findings can be design interventions increase ultimate aim reducing mortality.
