摘要: Environmental pressures caused by population growth and consumerism require the development of resource recovery from waste, hence a circular economy approach. The production chemicals fuels organic waste using mixed microbial cultures (MMC) has become promising. MMC use synergy bio-catalytic activities different microorganisms to transform complex feedstock, such as by-products food waste. In absence oxygen, feedstock can be converted into biogas through established anaerobic digestion (AD) potential shifted intermediate AD compounds precursors for renewable chemicals. A particular set pathways in fermentation, known chain elongation, occur under specific conditions producing medium carboxylic acids (MCCAs) with higher value than broader applicability. This review introduces elongation pathway other bio-reactions occurring during fermentation. We present an overview feedstocks used, pinpoint main operational parameters MCCAs temperature, pH, loading rates, inoculum, head space composition, reactor design. evaluates key findings MCCA MMC, concludes identifying critical research targets drive forward this promising technology valorisation method
