摘要: M. S. Peck (1987) identifies six characteristics of a "true community": (1) inclusiveness (no "in group" or "out group"); (2) commitment; (3) consensus (differences are acknowledged and processed); (4) contemplation; (5) vulnerability; (6) "graceful" fighting (conflict should not be avoided, minimized, disregarded). Based on these characteristics, several specific strategies for building community in the diverse speech communication classroom can followed. First, using student contracts allows students degree control determining course syllabus. Second, name game sorts "personal scavenger hunt" encourages to know one another. Third, setting ground rules discussions helps what expect. Fourth, 5-minute sharing time build daily basis. Fifth, accepting cards with questions them those higher communicaticn apprehension contribute discussion unobtrusively. Sixth, creating safe environment which comments ignored marginalized insures free-flowing exchange. Small group various permutations oral presentations helpful as well. Another strategy that builds is encouragement study groups. The groups randomly organized at first but reorganized each exam; this arrangement creates an opportunity where peer learning/teaching support rewarded. (Contains 40 references.)
