摘要: The lecture is introduced with some remarks on the biology of diatoms, a class ecologically very successful unicellular algae, that contributes about 20–25 % world biological primary production. Three species used as laboratory organisms in studies silicate metabolism and life cycles, are relevant cytological data: Cyclotella cryptica (5 h generation time, 350 µm2 geometric cell surface area, 22 SiO2 per dry weight 12 pg Si x cell−1) Bellerochea yucatanensis (6 3850 surface, 3 15–30 Coscinodiscus asteromphalus (24 33 000 38 40 cell−1).
