摘要: Diatoms are of great ecological importance. They may account for as much one-fourth the world’s entire net primary production by plants, and serve basis marine food webs. But diatoms unique among both baroque beauty endless variety their siliceous “shells” or frustules (Chap. 6) absolute dependence upon silicon growth development (Richter, 1906; Lewin, 1954). Within last 10 years, silicon, hitherto thought to be biologically inert, has been recognized an essential trace element in formation bone, cartilage, connective tissue mammals 4), well participating several other important mammalian metabolic processes. In addition, implicated causative agent silicotic lung diseases certain cancers (see Chap. 4; see also Bendz Lindqvist, 1978 biological role silicon). With new interest have emerged model organism research on metabolism.
