Dreams from Elsewhere: Muslim subjectivities beyond the trope of self‐cultivation

摘要: Drawing on dream stories from a Sufi community in Egypt, this article probes the limits of paradigm self-cultivation which has come to be widely employed anthropology Islam. While concept complicated equation agency and resistance, its emphasis intentionality deliberate action obscures other modes religiosity that centre neither acting within nor against but being acted upon. Far reaffirming self-cultivating subject, narratives visitational divinely inspired dreams are profound reminders unpredictability divine interventions contingency life itself. Through an analysis Egyptian conversation with anthropological literatures ethics passion, traces relational understanding subjectivity poses even more radical challenge liberal model autonomous self than do practices self-cultivation. Resume A partir des recits de reves d'une communaute soufie egyptienne, le present explore les limites du paradigme developpement personnel que l'on rencontre largement aujourd'hui dans l'anthropologie l'islam. En meme temps ce culture soi compliquait l'equation l'agency et la l'accent mis sur l'intentionnalite l'action deliberee occulte d'autres religiosite qui ne sont centres ni « », contre » mais fait subir une action. Au lieu corroborer l'idee d'un sujet se cultiverait lui-meme, visitation d'inspiration rappellent fortement l'imprevisibilite divines contingence vie humaine. Par l'analyse ces recueillis en Egypte dialogue avec litterature anthropologique consacree l'ethique cet retrace apprehension relationnelle subjectivite remet question modele autonome, encore plus radicalement font pratiques personnel.
