Winter distribution and group composition of humpback whales ( Megaptera novaeangliae ) off northern Peru

摘要: From late July to the end of September 2009, temporal and spatial distribution group composition humpback whales ( Megaptera novaeangliae ) were studied in order provide new information about species northern Peru, southern limit breeding area for Southeast Pacific population. Daily surveys made from a whale-watching boat Los Organos (04°10'38.78"S, 81°8'04.40"W) covering an approximately 74km 2 . Data geographic position are presented. A total 43 trips yielded 124 sightings. Whales observed throughout study period with peak abundance August. Humpbacks distributed mainly shallow waters between 20 50m depth. Pairs trios most common type, whereas adults mother/calf pairs principal sex/age classes. Our data confirms nursing activities wintering stock. Frequent use Peruvian coast by fishing operations may cause negative impacts on this sensitive phase humpback's life cycle. Thus, strengthening current protection measures is encouraged.
