摘要: New Zealand has a rich and diverse macroalgal flora that been studied since James Cook’s first voyage to in 1769. The region ranges from cool temperate seas at southerly latitudes to subtropical waters the north. Here we review the history of phycological research since 1900, current status taxonomy, ecology, physiology seaweed uses including aquaculture and extracts. Some 770 species of seaweed are known to Zealand, which 22 are alien. Few taxa have received monographic treatment and many remain be described. Polysaccharides have identified over 80 seaweeds and these compounds commercial potential. In addition urgent taxonomic work, future research should include national program longterm (> 5 years) monitoring communities, rates growth primary production, the contribution seaweed-based production coastal food webs.
