Incidence of dog bite and anti-rabies vaccine utilization in the, University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, Nigeria: A 12-year assessment

摘要: Abstract Aim To assess the incidence of dog bite and utilization anti-rabies vaccine between January 1997 December 2008. Methods Reported cases from archives were collected analyzed in Accident Emergency Centre University Benin Teaching Hospital, City, Nigeria. Result A total 143 reported none was previously immunized. They 14 64 years with male female ratio 7.2:1. Among them, 53% within 24 h, 36% after 30 days 11% two months affliction. Limbs most afflicted. Forty-two [29.37%] patients had multiple sites bite. Minor bleeding [71.33%] victims. Five hundred eighty-seven doses Rabipur® brand vaccines which 65.42% administered intradermally 34.58% intramuscularly. Only 71% victims treated Imogam Rabies® Rabies Immunoglobulin G. Sixty-three owners claimed that their dogs vaccinated. Of victims, 137[95.80%] completed routine 5 regimen. Forty-seven (32.87%) hospitalized; maximum duration [167 ± 0.71 h]. Ciprofloxacin paracetamol frequently used antibacterial anti-inflammatory agents, respectively. All anti-tetanus sera. One traditional medication prior to report presented clinical sign hydrophobia. He died despite therapy. Conclusion The although rare, there is need for adequate procurement stocking meet afflicted this region.
