摘要: A simple client/server architecture can quickly become infeasible when more media contents are made available online and users network- multimedia-ready. There have been significant studies on efficient content distribution over the Internet, targeting a large number of users. Most them were optimized for delivering conventional web objects or file download. The huge size, intensive bandwidth use, rich interactivity streaming however pose new challenges. Many emerging applications, such as Internet TV live event broadcast, further demand real-time multimedia services with massive audience, scaling challenge be enormous. In this chapter, we discuss mechanisms that enable high quality scalable streaming, including proxy caching, multicast, networks, peer-to-peer, HTTP streaming.
