C3: internet-scale control plane for video quality optimization

摘要: As Internet video goes mainstream, we see increasing user expectations for higher quality and new global policy requirements content providers. Inspired by the case centralizing network-layer control, present C3, a control system optimizing delivery. The design of C3 addresses key challenges in ensuring scalability tackling data plane heterogeneity. First, to ensure responsiveness, introduces novel split architecture that can tolerate small increase model staleness dramatic scalability. Second, supports diverse client-side platforms via minimal clientside sensing/actuation layer offloads complex monitoring logic plane. has been operational eight years, today handles more than 100M sessions per day from 244 countries 100+ providers improved significantly. In doing so, serves as proof point viability fine-grained centralized Internetscale applications. Our experiences reinforce with continued emergence use pulls (e.g., client diversity) technology pushes big platforms).
