摘要: Multi-week, research style projects within the context of a one-semester undergraduate course provide scope to explore topics in depth and build student skills. I developed research-style project for an sedimentology using grain size analysis sediments that combines developing field laboratory skills, improving writing ability, exploring statistical techniques encouraging critical thinking. The asks students consider hypothesis distribution sediment samples can be successfully used as fingerprints identify transport processes depositional environments. To do this groups work together collecting from beach environments, analyzing these use analyses such histograms log-probability graphs help interpret their data. graphs, which are somewhat controversial technique analysis, is chosen introduce contentious issues scientific encourage Success dependent on providing with sufficient time feedback re-write reports, analyze data contribute classroom presentations discussions. Development requires thoughtful selection topic will meet desired pedagogical objectives careful structure so managed effectively.
