摘要: Abstract We investigate the rates and magnitudes of Late Pliocene–Pleistocene uplift at key localities in southern Italian regions Basilicata Calabria using fluvial marine terraces. These show strong lateral variations, reaching maxima ∼1 mm a−1 or more Apennines, which have uplifted by many hundreds metres since late Early Pleistocene well over 1 km Middle Pliocene. Integrated study has been facilitated realisation that altitudes river terraces this region require substantial correction for downstream channel lengthening, given rapid coastal progradation is occurring, before they can be compared with high uplift, corresponding subsidence sea-floor adjacent offshore localities, are explained as consequences coupling between erosion sedimentation induced flow lower continental crust, being particularly due to narrowness part peninsula. Numerical modelling indicates time-averaged spatially averaged ∼0.5 mm a−1 early Pleistocene, less than regional rates, indicating landscape not a steady state. Although Italy lies within plate boundary zone, along African subducting crust extending, observed vertical crustal motions are, nevertheless, controlled surface processes; particular, across much region, extension shown important factor onshore driving motion.
