摘要: Objective To determine whether healthy dogs given high doses of methylprednisolone sodium succinate (MPSS) develop gastrointestinal tract ulcers and hemorrhage. Animals 19 male hound-type dogs. Procedure Dogs were assigned randomly to intravenously receive MPSS (30 mg/kg body weight, initially, then 15 2 6 hours later, and, subsequently, every for a total 48 hours; n = 10) or an equal volume saline (0.9% NaCl) solution (9). Gastroduodenoscopy was performed before after treatment. Endoscopic evidence gross hemorrhage in the cardia, fundus, antrum, duodenum each dog graded from none (0) severe (3), stomach score calculated as sum regional gastric scores. Number recorded. The pH fluid occult fecal blood measured. Food retention Results Gastric evident all administration 9 10 but not visible any Occult detected more commonly (9/10 vs 2/9), median acidity greater (pH 1 3), food retained (7/10 1/9) MPSS-treated Conclusions clinical relevance High cause All treated with should be mucosal protectants antacids prevent
