摘要: Abstract Marine protected areas (MPAs) – or sections of the ocean set aside where human activities such as fishing are restricted have been growing in popularity a marine conservation tool. As result, it is important to examine socioeconomic consequences MPAs and how they may affect nearby communities. This study explores social equity issues surrounding designation Marianas Trench National Monument, an MPA that includes protections around three most northern islands US territory Commonwealth Northern Islands (CNMI). We gathered oral history interviews with 40 individuals from CMNI Guam who had connections waters newly-designated reviewed key documents order (1) document historical current use (2) consider implications proposed regulations for local Our documented 129 trips visit living memory. found due distance, were rare but culturally significant events provided residents CNMI their indigenous roots. Regulation new has potential directly indirectly restrict access these waters. research highlights importance better collaboration partners consideration concerns siting regulation MPAs.
