Hazardous alcohol use among doctors in a Nigerian tertiary hospital.

摘要: Background : There has been conflicting reports of the level hazardous alcohol use among doctors despite significant occurrences in general population. Hence, need to study drinking habits doctors, being supposedly role models terms behavior and lifestyle. Methods: All consenting employ University Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Nigeria completed questionnaires detailing socio-demographic (e.g., age, gender, marital status, professional qualifications), workrelated leisure, workload, job satisfaction), clinical prior treatment) variables. The participants also 10-items Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) General Health Questionnaire-12 (GHQ-12). Results: Of 241 participants, ‘lifetime abstainers’ constituted 173 (71.8%) while (ever) use’ was 68 (28.2%), ‘past (time specified abstainers) 29 (12.0%), ‘current users’ were 39 (16.2%). Ten (4.1%) ‘hazardous (12.0%) ‘moderate users’. users’, 3 (30.0%) interns, 5 (50.0%) residents 2 (20.0%) consultants. They found five departments: Obstetrics & Gynaecology, 4 (40.0%); Laboratory Medicine, (30.0%); 1 (10.0%) each Pediatrics, Surgery, Internal Medicine. Heavy workload significantly related a drinker’ (X = 5.92, p= 0.015) ‘abstinence’ within previous 6 months GHQ-12 caseness (i.e., morbidity) =11.78, 0.0006). Conclusion detectable especially amongst junior doctors. Efforts should be focused on younger their workload. Keywords Hazardous, Alcohol, Doctors, AUDIT.
