摘要: Abstract How does globalization influence transitions toward more sustainable socio-technical regimes in the developing world? This paper argues that transformations of regimes, networks and institutions governing technological environmental practices an industry, can be positively influenced by but it depends on how global forces interact with local socio-political landscapes—the political–economic institutions, values, regulations broadly guiding economy its relationship to environment. We evaluate these relationships through a comparison two kinds neo-liberal export-led development model commonly found world uniquely Asian capitalist developmental state. first show overemphasizes power market facilitate upgrading industrialization. then argue states East Southeast Asia have been better able harness economic for sustainability openness trade investment effective public–private link cleaner technologies standards production activities firms. buttress this argument firm-level evidence showing evolution industries—cement electronics. The case studies demonstrate interactions OECD firms contribute technique effects provided landscape is amenable changes industry's regime. Ultimately, we find process transition complex contingent; hard slog not leap frog potentially future. close considering limitations state comments about what else needs learned globalization's role transitions.
