摘要: The Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West Africa (OCP) started operations 1975. Its main objectives were to eliminate human onchocerciasis, as a disease of public-health importance and an obstacle socio-economic development, from the area. By end 2002, OCP covered 11 African countries, had introduced large-scale Mectizan (ivermectin) distribution about 10 million people, through communitydirected treatment approach, with coverages ranging 51%-81%. Research on use illustrated evidence-based results, power multicountry studies, need for social science community-driven endeavours research, value empowering communities allies control. generous donation by Merck & Co., Inc., has increased general interest health-related public-private partnerships generated momentum other donations tackle diseases. vector control which was initially based successfully interrupted transmission parasite causing Onchocerca volvulus, many areas. introduction led decline anterior-segment lesions eye arrest posterior-segment lesions. drug continues be highly effective morbidity control, although recently there have been reports sub-optimal responses some adult O. albeit few, very small isolated foci.
