Three-Year Surveillance of Intussusception in Children in Switzerland

摘要: OBJECTIVE: We attempted to obtain baseline data on the incidence of intussusception and its association with gastroenteritis in a cross-sectional observational study children. METHODS: Admissions all 38 pediatric units Switzerland because were reported Swiss Pediatric Surveillance Unit from April 2003 March 2006. Patient disease characteristics assessed prospectively use standardized questionnaire based case definition for developed by Brighton Collaboration. Completeness reporting was verified through capture-recapture analysis. RESULTS: There 294 patients intussusception; 35 cases excluded various reasons, 29 additional identified International Classification Diseases, 10th Revision, codes. After analysis, we estimated underreporting be 32% calculated true number 381 episodes. The highest level diagnostic certainty reached 248 patients, 20 fulfilled 2 criteria; remaining available information insufficient. mean age 2.7 years. yearly 38, 31, 26 per 100,000 live births first, second, third year life, respectively, no apparent seasonality. Seventy had history coinciding gastroenteritis, 5 61 tested positive rotavirus. Spontaneous devagination observed patients; enemas reduced successfully 183 cases, whereas surgical treatment required 67. All recovered without sequelae. CONCLUSIONS: This is first prospective nationwide surveillance childhood using definition. Most occurred beyond infancy, rotavirus rare.
